Animal migration is when animals travel to another area on a seasonal basis. Why Do Animals Migrate? Animals migrate to warmer climates to survive during the winter.
It can be hard to find food during the cold months so they will head south and come back when spring approaches. Other animals migrate in order to breed. We will also look at other ways animal prepare for surviving the cold winter months. These are typically the animals we are thinking about when we talk about animal migration. But there are other reasons to migrate as we will see below. They will often leave together in big flocks of hundreds or thousands of birds.
This is typical behavior for animals in areas where the summer is warm in the winter is cold. Most animals are made to live within a certain set of temperatures. So they have developed this behavior in order to stay warm during the cold months.
Around the Equator, we find countries where it is summer and pretty hot all year long. This is true for African countries like Kenya and Tanzania. Animals who lived around these countries will not migrate because they have the same planet all year round. They may leave for several years in order to take care of their eggs and then head back to the area they came from. And then the cycle starts all over again. The same things go for Whales, Seals as we will see below , and many fish like Salmons.
The Salmons head for warm waters in order to lay eggs and breed. This happens all over the world and not only in cold countries. You might have noticed how we often find frogs, salamanders, and toads in public areas like roads and highways. This is not because they live there. Some animals will simply migrate in order to breed in a better and safer environment.
Have you ever wondered how animals know exactly when is a good time to migrate? They seem to always leave at the correct time and always know exactly when to come back. They are migratory birds that migrate seasonally to enjoy seasonal temperature differences. They migrate to regions that have milder Atlantic climates. Flamingos live in large saline or alkaline lakes or wetlands that generally lack vegetation.
The habitats that are used by these birds are tidal flats, sandy islands, and mangrove swamps. All the species of flamingos are found in the subtropical and tropical areas. The distribution of the flamingos is quite varied. Different species of flamingos have inhabited different parts of the world. This is because of the characteristic differences between them.
Flamingos migrate in flocks because of their adaptation to living in groups. There are several dozens of flamingos or even more in a flock that migrates together to the same region. When the flock migrates and covers long distances, the birds organize themselves in different shaped formations and fly close to each other. Flying in groups close to each other helps the birds to force through air resistance. It is because of the flapping of wings of the flock that occurs together during flying.
Flamingos change their formations while flying to use different wind patterns for their benefit. In warm climates, flamingos keep cool by standing in water. A group of crows is called a murder, and a group of geese is called a gaggle. So, what is a group of flamingos called? A flamboyance! Other collective nouns for flamingos include stand, colony and pat.
In the wild, flamingos sometimes gather by the thousands! Greater flamingos are found in parts of Africa, Asia, and Europe. They are the largest and tallest flamingo species. Andean flamingos are the rarest of the six species, with fewer than 40, birds. Lesser flamingos are found in parts of Africa and southern Asia. They are the smallest flamingos and the most abundant. There are more than 2 million lesser flamingos brightening skies and shores with their pink plumage.
Flamingo legs actually bend just like human legs. What looks like a flamingo's knee is really its ankle joint. The Flamingo is a limited ultra-rare pet, which was added to Adopt Me! As it is now unavailable, it can only be obtained by trading or by hatching any remaining Safari Eggs. It is not legal to own a flamingo without a proper license. They are protected by the law and it is illegal to own them as a pet.
Flamingos require special food to maintain their pink color and they need open space with water areas for feeding. They are not pet material and should be treated as wild animals. Some birds like the Arctic tern take migration to a whole new level, literally traveling up and down the entire planet in a year. Greater flamingos migrate to India for much the same reason that other birds migrate: to find food and to lay eggs.
