He was also appointed a Deputy-Lieutenant of Surrey. However, he wasn't knighted for having created Sherlock Holmes. He was made a knight for his work on a non-fiction pamphlet regarding the Boer War. Many British troops died from the same cause and so Conan Doyle reasoned that the civilians in the camps were being treated at least as well as Great Britain treated its own troops. Amazingly, he completed the work in only eight days.
The work was a success. Conan Doyle seriously considered refusing the offer. He did not see why he should receive such recognition for merely doing his duty.
His mother , who loved family history and heraldry, was horrified to learn that her son might refuse knighthood.
She wrote him and argued that he should accept the honor. He set up an ophthalmology practice in London but wrote in his autobiography that not a single patient ever crossed his door. He was relatively successful both times but was never actually elected. His dramatic death on 7 July saw him collapse in his garden, clutching his heart with one hand and holding a flower in the other. Conan is, in fact, only one of his two middle names.
It is also said and believed that he killed Sherlock so that he could focus on writing about his passion — Spiritualism. The celebrated detective returned, however. Doyle had to resurrect him ten years later, on public demand and monetary grounds.
Doyle believed that the money earned through Sherlock books could be used to for popularizing spiritualism. His mother loved Sherlock more than he did. He admitted to having gotten weary of his best creation and it was his mother who persuaded him against it for a long time before he actually killed him in Doyle believed in fairies.
In , there was a famous hoax called the Cottingley Fairy photographs and Doyle believed in them and he also spent millions promoting them.
