The town is famous for its light-hearted atmosphere and longstanding fair. The town of Vanity, like the City of Destruction from where Christian had fled, is representative of the world in its opposition to God.
The City of Destruction portrays the world as under the wrath and condemnation of God for its sin and immorality. The town of Vanity dresses up the sin and immorality of the world to appear alluring and desirable. It is enticing to the eye, but empty in the end.
Vanity represents the pride, arrogance and conceit of the world. It is a description of the world without Christ. It is life without the hope of the gospel—meaningless, futile and pointless in the end. The description comes from the words of Solomon in Ecclesiastes:.
The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem. One generation passes away, and another generation comes; But the earth abides forever. The sun also rises, and the sun goes down, And hastens to the place where it arose. The wind goes toward the south, And turns around to the north; The wind whirls about continually, And comes again on its circuit. All the rivers run into the sea, Yet the sea is not full; To the place from which the rivers come, There they return again.
All things are full of labor; Man cannot express it. The eye is not satisfied with seeing, Nor the ear filled with hearing. That which has been is what will be, That which is done is what will be done, And there is nothing new under the sun. Is there anything of which it may be said, "See, this is new"?
It has already been in ancient times before us. There is no remembrance of former things, Nor will there be any remembrance of things that are to come By those who will come after.
I, the Preacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem. And I set my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all that is done under heaven; this burdensome task God has given to the sons of man, by which they may be exercised.
I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and indeed, all is vanity and grasping for the wind Ecclesiastes — Solomon looked at the futility of life in this world and concluded "all is vanity"!
He repeats this assessment throughout the book:. Then I looked on all the works that my hands had done And on the labor in which I had toiled; And indeed all was vanity and grasping for the wind. There was no profit under the sun.
It is an ancient town named Vanity Fair, where, all year round, such merchandise is bought and sold "as houses, lands, trades, places, honors, preferments, titles, countries, kingdoms, lusts, pleasures, and delights of all sorts, as whores, bawds, wives, husbands, children, masters, servants, lives, blood, bodies, souls, silver, gold, pearls, precious stones, and what not.
Entering the town, the two Pilgrims cause quite a stir. Their dress is different from that of the townspeople, and they speak a language "the language of Canaan" that is not understood. They are plainly "outlandish men" foreigners , and are put down as fools or "bedlams" madmen. But what particularly irks the townspeople is their attitude toward the goods displayed at the fair. When called to look at them, they turn away, putting their fingers in their ears and crying out, "Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity" Ps.
When mockingly asked what they might be interested in buying, they "gravely" reply, "We buy the Truth" Prov. A crowd gathers to taunt and revile them, "some calling upon others to smite them," which leads to a great hubbub and the arrest of the Pilgrims for disturbing the peace.
After being questioned, they are severely beaten and locked up in an iron cage to be made a spectacle to the multitude, being for some time "the objects of any man's sport, or malice, or revenge. Under these trying circumstances, Christian and Faithful conduct themselves so "very wisely and soberly" that some of the townspeople begin to sympathize with them and urge their release.
This splits the town into two factions which soon clash in the streets, creating another hubbub. The prisoners, though they have done nothing, are held responsible for this, too, and the authorities decide to bring them to trial on charges that they are "enemies to and disturbers of their trade; that they have made commotions and divisions in the town, and had won a party to their own most dangerous opinions in contempt of the law of their prince.
Faithful is the first to be called before the judge, Lord Hate-good. When allowed to speak in his own defense, he declares himself to be a man of peace, bound on an innocent journey to the Celestial City; as for the prince of the place, "since he is Beelzebub, the enemy of our Lord, I defy him and all his angels. Swearing falsely, Envy testifies that he has long known Faithful, that he has always been a troublemaker, persistently denouncing the laws and customs of the town; Superstition, that he had heard Faithful say that all in Vanity Fair were damned because their "religion was naught"; Pickthank, that he was well ac-quainted with the defendant, who railed continuously against "our noble Prince Beelzebub and.
