Limestone is one of the different rocks. We use the term limestone universally for many kinds of calcium carbonate rocks. Limestone is anamorphic and the main composition in limestone is CaCO3 calcium carbonate. Limestone was formed in the sea millions of years ago. Corals and crustaceans in the sea died and were dumped on the seabed, where they were continuously covered by sand. This resulted in limestone creation. The concrete used to create the walls, the milk of lime used to whitewash the walls, and the marble used to pave the floor are well-known building materials and all the above examples are made of limestone.
The limestone becomes exceedingly hard marble because of high temperature and pressure geological processes. After being mined, limestone is combined with clay and fired in a kiln. The mixture is pounded to a fine powder after a tiny amount of gypsum is added. Cement is the name for this fine powder. Concrete is a common construction material made of cement, sand, gravel, and water. Limestone reacts with vinegar and fizzes as the acidic vinegar moves away from it.
It can be found throughout the world, although it is most prominent in the Grand Canyon and other locations. Marble is a metamorphic rock, which means it changes over time. Metamorphism a process in which we subject the rock to heat and pressure of limestone results in the formation of this rock Caco3.
Marble is formed with the addition of iron oxides and graphite in lower amounts. Its outer and inner layers are made up of different materials, and it is composed of water, gases, and other matter, but it is also composed of rocks. These rocks have three types, namely:. Igneous rock which is made up of magma or lava that has solidified. Sedimentary rock which is made up of mineral and organic particles that have accumulated in an area.
Metamorphic rock which is made up of igneous or sedimentary rocks that have been subjected to high temperature causing them to crystallize. Examples of metamorphic rock are: slate, quartzite, schist, gneiss, and marble. Examples of sedimentary rock are conglomerate, breccias, sandstone, siltstone, shale, chert, coal, halite, gypsum, and limestone. Limestone is a rock that is formed when mud, sand, and shells are deposited in oceans and lakes and develop into a sedimentary rock.
Since it is made up of fossilized particles, it is porous and is soluble in water. It is composed of silica, clay, silt, and sand. It also has many colors and may be crystalline, clastic, granular, or massive. Although it is a heavy material and is not suitable for use in tall buildings, the great pyramid is made with limestone. It lasts long and is easy to cut and carve although it is more expensive than other materials.
It has many uses such as:. Raw material for cement, mortar, and lime. The manufacturing of cosmetics, medicines, glass, paper, plastic, tiles, and toothpaste. Building material, artwork, pollution control, and soil neutralizer. Source of calcium and water treatment. Depending on the pH value of water, temperature of water, and ion concentration, calcite may remain as a precipitate or dissolve. Therefore, limestone can only barely survive in water and, when in deep water bodies, it dissolves due to high water pressure.
Most ancient caves were naturally formed due to the erosion of large bodies of limestone by water over thousands of million years. Clay, silt and sand from rivers together with bits of silica from the remains of marine organisms and iron oxides are the most commonly found impurities in limestone.
Due to the presence of these impurities in varying amounts, they exhibit different colours. Depending on the method of formation it can take different physical shapes.
Limestone was most famous during the 19th and 20th century as many public buildings and structures were made from limestone. As raw material in the manufacture of cement and mortar , crushed as a solid base for roads, added as white pigment in medicines, cosmetics, toothpastes, paper, plastics etc. Marble is formed when the carbonate material in limestone gets recrystallized.
